R-Factor reaches the opposite conclusion. Hart finished with 15 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals &#8212; the most structurally efficient individual performance of the game by a significant margin.</p><p>Every rebound Hart secured ended a Spurs possession. Every steal he generated created a Knicks opportunity. Karl-Anthony Towns carries a 2.5% block rate. No single player anchors the defensive system &#8212; it distributes across the rotation, which means individual foul trouble or fatigue creates disruption but not collapse. That&#8217;s the structural advantage of a system-generated defense: opponents can&#8217;t scheme around a single player to unlock it.</p><p>Brunson as the late-game carrier &#8212; the Primary R-Poise &#8212; is the clearest statement of what the Knicks have built. In compressed fourth quarters, the possession environment reduces to who can generate offense from nothing. Brunson has proven that answer is him. Towns is the Secondary R-Poise: the offensive rebound platform and interior reset that generates second possessions in the moments when Brunson&#8217;s creation doesn&#8217;t convert.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Why Wembanyama Can Flip This Series</h3><p>And yet.</p><p>The 2026 San Antonio Spurs won a Game 7 on the road in Oklahoma City. They went into the Paycom Center &#8212; against the best team in the NBA, with home crowd and playoff familiarity &#8212; and won 111-103. That game required balanced production from Wembanyama, Champagnie, Castle, Fox, and Harper. The Spurs&#8217; best lineup through the entire playoff run &#8212; Fox, Castle, Vassell, Champagnie, Wembanyama &#8212; logged 354 possessions at a +28.8 differential, 120.9 points per possession. That is elite. It&#8217;s not the Knicks&#8217; team-level number, but it&#8217;s the number that matters for understanding what San Antonio can do at their ceiling.</p><p>Wembanyama is the reason the ceiling exists at all.</p><p>His playoff on/off differential of +17.3 is the highest impact number on either roster. That figure represents what happens to the Spurs&#8217; possession environment when he&#8217;s on the court versus off &#8212; the answer is: everything gets better. The offense generates rhythm from his gravitational presence at the five. The defense transforms from competent to suppressive. His 5.4% block rate ranked 97th percentile. He doesn&#8217;t just protect the rim &#8212; he moves it. Teams stop driving when Wembanyama is vertical. They shoot earlier. They shoot worse. That distortion is what makes the Spurs&#8217; defensive ceiling so difficult to model from standard metrics.</p><p>The matchup this creates is genuinely novel. When the Spurs win &#8212; when control swings their direction &#8212; it typically traces back to Wembanyama making three or four possessions harder than they would otherwise be, Castle or Harper converting off those disrupted looks, and Fox asserting pace control before the Knicks&#8217; offensive rhythm can establish.</p><p>Dylan Harper&#8217;s playoff on/off of +11.6 is the quiet structural signal in San Antonio&#8217;s numbers. The secondary units held up comparably. New York&#8217;s rotational depth didn&#8217;t collapse when Brunson rested. That&#8217;s the signal that separates a system team from a player-dependent one.</p><p>The Spurs&#8217; top unit at +28.8 is the strongest large-sample lineup signal in the available playoff data set. Read that correctly: in the possessions where San Antonio deployed their optimal five, they were dominant. The problem isn&#8217;t that the ceiling is too low. It&#8217;s that the floor &#8212; when Wembanyama goes to the bench or Castle faces foul trouble &#8212; is materially lower than the Knicks&#8217; equivalent reserve unit. San Antonio&#8217;s backup rotation (Castle-Harper-Vassell-Johnson-Kornet) ran at +14.5 across 90 possessions &#8212; positive, but significantly below the starter five. Those aren&#8217;t players riding Brunson&#8217;s coattails. They&#8217;re players whose presence meaningfully changes what New York&#8217;s offense can do. Depth that sustains control is the advantage that compounds across a seven-game series.</p><div><hr></div><h3>The R-Poise Battle</h3><p>This Finals will be decided by Brunson versus Wembanyama in the late-game environment.</p><p>That isn&#8217;t a matchup in the traditional sense &#8212; they don&#8217;t guard each other. It&#8217;s a structural competition. Brunson&#8217;s R-Poise function is to generate offense from nothing in the fourth quarter when possessions compress and the defense locks. Wembanyama&#8217;s R-Poise function is to make that process harder than it should be &#8212; to turn a clean Brunson drive into a contested pullup, to turn a Towns dump-off into a blocked shot, to turn a quarter into a controlled tempo environment where SAS&#8217;s offense can operate.</p><p>Brunson has proven he can carry late-game possessions under pressure. He&#8217;s done it in this playoff run and across his entire run in New York. The question R-Factor asks isn&#8217;t whether Brunson is a capable clutch carrier. He is. The question is whether Wembanyama can distort the environment enough to make the Brunson closing structure less efficient than it needs to be.</p><p>In at least two or three games of this series, he will.</p><div><hr></div><h3>Where the Series Breaks</h3><p>RFI &#8212; the rhythm fragility layer &#8212; reads Medium-High for San Antonio and Medium for New York.</p><p>SAS&#8217;s fragility points are structural. Castle&#8217;s foul rate (high relative to position) creates rotation stress in Games 5-7. The backup five plays significantly below the starter unit. The offense is more volatile &#8212; it runs hotter when Wembanyama is dominant and cools when the defensive geometry shifts. Against a Knicks team that creates second-chance possessions at a rate that Cleveland couldn&#8217;t contain, San Antonio will need to win the defensive rebounding battle consistently to prevent New York from generating extended possession sequences.</p><p>New York&#8217;s fragility is narrower. The primary risk is shooting variance in the Spurs&#8217; favor. If the Knicks&#8217; 3-point volume cools and Wembanyama simultaneously has a dominant defensive game, the offense can stall in the 110s rather than operate in the 120s. The series will have structural blowout games in both directions. That volatility is baked into the asymmetric RFI profile.</p><div><hr></div><h3>The Pick</h3><p>Knicks in 7.</p><p>The Knicks hold the &#916;R edge at +2. Their offensive architecture is broader. Their defensive system distributes load. Their R-Poise hierarchy &#8212; Brunson primary, Towns secondary &#8212; is durable. The depth sustains control when the starter unit needs rest. New York has the cleaner overall playoff signal, and across a full seven-game series, structural advantages compound.</p><p>But this is not a sweep. It&#8217;s not a blowout series. San Antonio beat the best team in the Western Conference in seven games with a young core in their first Finals appearance. Wembanyama is likely to remove the rim in at least two games. Those are San Antonio&#8217;s clearest win windows. The series will reach a seventh game because the Spurs&#8217; ceiling unit is capable of winning any single game they play.</p><p>The Knicks hold control. San Antonio owns the threat.</p><p>Games 1-2 establish the possession environment. If the Knicks win Game 1 cleanly, the series tilts toward Knicks in six. If San Antonio steals Game 1, the seven-game path becomes fully live.
